Rakovica Bay - the quiet side of Maun

Most people who visit Maun head straight to Janica beach on the north side of the island. It’s beautiful, it’s easy to find, and in peak season it’s packed — 10 to 15 boats anchored in the same spot on a busy day.

Rakovica is the opposite. It’s a long, narrow inlet carved deep into the rocky southern coastline of Maun, tucked away from the open sea and invisible from most angles. There’s no sandy beach here, no beach bar, no Instagram spot. What you get instead is steep cliffs on both sides, water so still it looks like glass, and silence — the kind you forget exists in summer.

The bay splits into several smaller coves as you go deeper in, each one more sheltered than the last. Pick one, cut the engine, and you’ll hear nothing but the wind and the occasional sound of sheep wandering the rocks above. They’re the only residents.

Getting there

Rakovica is on the southwest side of Maun, about 10 minutes by boat from ACI Marina Šimuni. You’ll pass the island’s northern tip and follow the coast down. The entrance to the bay is narrow enough that you might miss it the first time — look for a gap in the cliffs where the water colour changes from deep blue to pale green.

We mark the exact spot for every guest on the map during the safety briefing, so there’s no guesswork involved.

Anchoring

The bay is well protected from most winds, with depths between 7 and 13 metres throughout. The bottom holds well. The one exception is bura — the bay faces northeast at its mouth, so if a strong northeasterly is forecast, skip Rakovica and head to the sheltered side of Olib instead.

Because the inlet is narrow, you’ll want to anchor carefully and leave space. In practice, this is rarely a problem — most days you’ll have the entire bay to yourself.

What to expect

This is not a beach day. Rakovica is for people who want to swim off the boat in deep clear water, snorkel along the rocky walls, or just sit on deck with a cold drink and stare at the cliffs. The snorkelling here is excellent — the rocky coastline of Maun has diverse marine life and visibility is usually outstanding.

There are no facilities, no shade on land, and no easy way to climb ashore. Bring everything you need on the boat — drinks, food, sunscreen. We send every guest off with a pre-cooled fridge, so you’re covered on that front.

Best combined with

Rakovica works perfectly as a morning stop before heading further out to Olib or Silba. Spend an hour or two in the bay while the water is calm and the light is best, then continue your day trip south.

Fuel-wise, adding Rakovica to a Maun visit barely changes your consumption — the island is only 4 miles from the marina, and the detour around to the south side adds maybe 10 minutes and a few extra litres.
